4) FUNDRAISER:  Philly's Men Are Cookin' 2008

Saturday, November 22, 2008
17th Anniversary

Greetings from The Ivy Legacy Foundation, the 501(c)(3) charitable arm of Rho Theta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. This year, The Ivy Legacy Foundation is celebrating the seventeenth annual Philly's Men Are Cookin': Philadelphia's Premier Celebration of Taste, a noble fundraising event that showcases the culinary talents of volunteer chefs, both amateur and professional, who prepare and serve their signature dishes for attendees to enjoy. While Philadelphia is known for hosting wonderful events that highlight the culinary arts, Philly's Men Are Cookin' is the only local event of its kind that is overwhelmingly attended by an affluent and influential African-American population. Your presence will make it an even greater success. As a result, we would like to extend to you a personal invitation to this year's legendary benefit.

For the third year in a row, The National Constitution Center, in the heart of Center City Philadelphia, will provide a stellar backdrop for our event that will be held on Saturday, November 22, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. and will feature a VIP Reception, the Main Event, Silent Auction and Post Event Social. This event historically attracts over 1,000 guests and is guaranteed to be a fantastic evening of great networking, fabulous entertainment and delicious food in support of raising funds for our scholarships and community grants.

7) Public Art: Philly's Got it Goin' On

It's Philadelphia's eccentricities - like the Clothespin in Center City, the eagle in Wanamaker's, or the goat in Rittenhouse Square - that give the city its unique character and invigorate its public spaces. Yet we continually take them for granted.

Philadelphia was the first city to develop not only one, but two, Percent for Art policies, which require that one percent of the construction costs of specific new development be spent on public art. And since 1959, more than 450 works of art have been commissioned, making the city's collection of public art the largest in the world!

Come join YIP for the final event of our arts and culture series, as we tour several public art projects in Center City, including the Marriott Hotel, the Criminal Justice Center, MSB Plaza, and the Convention Center, and learn more about the Redevelopment Authority Percent for Art program from its director, Susan Davis.

Date: Saturday, November 22nd
Time: 3 PM - 4:30 PM
Location: City Hall, East Market Street Entrance
RSVP: yipsocial@gmail.com

8) GOING GREEN FORUM

Lessons in Sustainability Forum: Everyday Efforts for Going Green
Is that twisty-looking light bulb really that much better? Is leasing solar panels the answer? Is "going green" something you even understand, and do you have to sacrifice hot showers to achieve it?

Sustainability is everywhere these days. IBM has targeted the concept in commerce, municipalities are employing "green" measures, and after a summer of sky-rocketing fuel costs, energy efficiency and alternatives are front-and-center in the mainstream media. Even Family Guy advertisements are focusing on being eco-friendly. But what does sustainability mean for you as a young person in Philadelphia? Sure, these macro strategic measures may be sensible and necessary, but they probably don't provide the opportunities you're looking for to get active.

To explain how personal sustainability can impact your household, workplace, and community, Young Involved Philadelphia is partnering with The Academy of Natural Sciences to sponsor a forum that will offer sustainable solutions for everyday life. Come ask your questions and get insights, ideas, and resources from our panel of Philadelphia's brightest - and greenest - young minds.

Date: Monday, November 24th
Time: 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM
Location: Main Auditorium, Academy of Natural Sciences, 19th St. & Ben Franklin Parkway
RSVP: yipciviced@gmail.com

9) 2008 Adopt a Family Fundraising Program

Sunday, November 30, 7:00PM

It's time for the annual Adopt a Family project. We have started off with two families and, depending on how much we raise, we hope to take on additional kids. For those who have not been involved before, it works like this:

We collect funds for local families who are in major need of assistance in order to have a Christmas. We receive a listing of gifts from the family which usually includes clothing, coats, etc more so then any toys. We work with the list provided by the family to ensure we get the kids what they need as well as some toys. As we collect funds, we budget about $150 per child. We also usually work to get some funds for the gaurdians (usually some Acme or Walmart gift cards).

The gaurdians advise if the gifts should be from "Santa" or if it should be known that we provided the gifts. Each year, we have a mixture of gaurdians who wish to surprise the kids as well as though who enjoy us meeting the kids.

If you are interested in donating or being involved in this year's fundraiser, please let me know.
Funds are required this year by the end of November: Nov 30th.

22) MENU LABELING COMES TO PHILLY 2010

Thank City Council for Voting YES to Menu Labeling!  You did it! Your voice was heard!  Due to the hard work of all our advocates as well as our Menu Labeling Coalition, the Philadelphia City Council passed Councilwoman Reynolds Brown's menu labeling bill last week!  The scene in the Council Chamber was very exciting, with menu labeling supporters filling the room and holding up signs.  This display of broad public support was definitely a deciding factor in the passage of the bill, as Councilmembers turned around in their seats to admire the crowd.

Philadelphia joins New York City, the state of California, and other localities who have approved menu labeling policies.  The Philadelphia menu labeling policy is the strongest in the country.  Starting in January 2010, large chain restaurants with 15 or more outlets will provide calories on their menu boards, and calories, saturated and trans fat, sodium and carbohydrates on printed menus.
